What is PII Blackout?

PII Blackout is Windows desktop software that finds personal data in PDF, Word and Excel files and removes it, so the content is deleted rather than covered with a box. The developer says it recognises more than 70 types of personal data, and that documents are processed offline on the PC once the user has signed in to verify the licence. It offers OCR for scanned PDFs, batch processing of whole folders and redaction reports, and is aimed at solo attorneys, paralegals and small businesses preparing documents to share. It is available as an installer and from the Microsoft Store; a macOS version is listed as in development. A free tier allows three PDFs a day of up to 15 pages each. Paid plans run from $29 to $149 a month, and one-time Day and Week passes cost $9.90 and $34.90. The product is operated by an individual developer, Shao Shuai.

Best for: Law firms and small businesses that need to redact documents on their own PC without uploading them
